Suspension & Shock Absorbers

Your vehicles suspension is designed to reduce the vibrations and undulations from the road surface and provide you with a comfortable drive. The shock absorbers and coil springs work together to absorb the impact of the roads surface and keep your vehicle stable and more comfortable for yourself and your passengers.

Over time your suspension system can take quite a beating, absorbing every bump and dip that the road throws at it. This can take quite a toll on this part of your vehicle. That’s why at John Delany Motors we recommend a regular suspension health check.

Suspension damage is not only a potential MOT Test failure, but it can also make your car dangerous to drive on the road due to unpredictable handling; causing great danger to not only you and your passengers but also to other road users and pedestrians.

It is not always obvious that a problem in your vehicle suspension system is present. This is generally be due to a gradual loss of performance and, because this happens over time, you may not always feel the gradual decrease in suspension performance.

You should consider getting your suspension & shock absorbers checked if:

  • You can hear a clunking or knocking noise when going over bumps.
  • You can hear a creaking noise when the car is in motion and in particular when you are turning a corner.
  • When the car feels heavier than usual to turn corners
  • When the car feels un-even in the general handling of the vehicle.

For example, if you’re travelling at 30mph and your shock absorbers are worn it can increase your braking distance by two metres because your tyres will have less contact with the road on uneven surfaces. This can be extremely dangerous for you, your passengers and other motorists, so it’s important that you have this part of your vehicle checked regularly to see if you need a suspension or car shock absorber repair or replacement.

If you have noticed that your car isn’t as stable as it used to be, it’s important to service your suspension in order to improve the safety of the vehicle and also to prolong the lifespan of your car. Our qualified technicians can carry out all types of repairs to your vehicle’s suspension system from replacement of metalastic bushes to major overhauls. Suspension checks are recommended annually so that you can spot any potential issues, before they lead to possible larger issues and costs. This is done both on MOT Tests and Servicing.
