Modern exhaust systems usually consist not only of the exhaust itself but also of catalytic converters (CAT) and, on diesel vehicles, a diesel particulate filter (DPF). These are fitted with multiple electronic sensors measuring such things as gas pressures, heat, harmful gases and contaminants. The sensors adjust the engine management system accordingly ensuring the final emissions meet the required standard.
A Catalytic Converter (CAT) is normally fitted towards the front of the exhaust system. It controls the emissions and reduces the toxic gases and pollutants from the exhaust gas, converting them into less toxic pollutants.
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are fitted to diesel vehicles only. They remove harmful soot or diesel particles from the exhaust gas in order to reduce emissions. DPF’s were fitted to all diesel vehicles from 2009.
Although the vehicle is designed to clean its own DPF through active regeneration, over time it can become blocked usually causing a loss of power or illuminated engine management lights. Active regeneration can be performed by driving the vehicle for 10 minutes or so at a constant speed of 40mph or more. We are also able to carry out a forced regeneration using our equipment within the workshop.
If all else fails, rather than replacing a potentially expensive DPF, at John Delany Motors we have the tools and experience to clean it at a fraction of the cost.
Other exhaust issues can be excessive noise or rattling usually caused by either corrosion or broken mountings. We can check this for you free of charge by performing a visual check underneath the car.
If you suspect an issue with your exhaust, we advise that you get it inspected as soon as possible. Depending on where and how your exhaust is affected will impact whether your vehicle is safe to drive or not.
We’ve been carrying out exhaust repairs and replacements for 40 years and our technicians are some of the best trained in the country. All exhausts fitted by John Delany Motors Ltd carry a minimum 2 Year guarantee and can also be fitted while you wait.
