Your cars electrical safety checklist

It’s important to run through an electrical safety checklist to ensure that all of your car’s electrical features are working properly. From your windscreen wipers to your indicators, they’re all essential when navigating the roads day or night.

With 35% of motorists not checking if their car’s lights are in working order, faulty car lights could result in a car crash or accident. Avoiding this is something you’ll want to ensure at all costs.

With that being said, a car electrical safety checklist is useful to have, so that you can always check that everything is working correctly before driving onto the road. Conducting visual checks of these electrical features can be important to the safety of the driver and passengers.

Windscreen wipers

Windscreen wipers are important because they improve the visual of what you see on the road in front of and behind you. As part of your inspection checklist, windscreen wipers are the first thing to check. Are they operational? Do they work on all settings properly?

If they’re not working or seem to be starting and then stopping suddenly, it’s worth getting them checked. After all, in certain weather conditions, it can be critical to have. For them not to function properly can be detrimental to your perception of the road and any dangers that might be around you.

Check for signs of damage to the windscreen wipers as there may be wear and tear that have caused them to stop working.

Car lights

Car lights are important to check, especially when it comes to the headlights and indicators. Your headlights allow you to see in front of you and allow other drivers to see you, in a variety of weather conditions. During the winter, with the evenings drawing in earlier, having headlights that work properly is essential.

Make sure to check these headlights before driving off. The same with your indicators. Apart from your car’s horn, your indicators are the only way to show other drivers where you’re going. If these don’t work, you could suddenly find yourself driving into a car or vice versa.

Radio

While the radio isn’t the most essential part of the car, it is important to check that it’s working properly. The radio is something that can prove useful when on the road and listening out for road closures and other problems in the local area where traffic and traffic collisions are concerned.

Make sure the radio works properly or that you have an available mobile device to play a radio from if required.

Starter and alternator

The starter and alternator are two important parts of the car. The starter converts the electrical energy of the vehicle into mechanical energy. The alternator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy to allow the car to charge its battery while driving.

It’s therefore highly important that both are working correctly in order for the car to function properly. Both can wear over time, so it’s important to keep an eye on these electrical systems and get them tested and checked over by a professional.

Dashboard instruments

There are a number of dashboard instruments to pay attention to and this electrical equipment needs to be checked over to see that everything works properly.

From the rev counter to the speedometer, warning lights, and even the horn, should all be tested. All of these dashboard instruments need to be displayed properly in order for the driver to understand the speed they’re going at as well as indicators for vehicle warnings or faults.

If you’re unfamiliar with what some warning lights mean, consult your vehicle’s handbook as this will explain it for you in detail.

Battery

Finally, the battery. One of the most important parts of the car. For an electric vehicle, the battery is the one piece of equipment that powers the car to run the electrics. Battery health is important to ensure all the electrics are working properly. Test equipment can be helpful to have in order to make sure the battery is in full working order.
