The new A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road

The new A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road opened to pedestrians and cyclists yesterday and we went along to explore it before it opens to vehicles next week. The road will provide a vital link for residents and businesses across Stockport, Manchester and East Cheshire. It’s hoped that the road will reduce congestion and traffic as users will take a direct link to the airport and local businesses will be brought within easier reach for all.

Sunday kicked off with a 5k Wheelchair race & run (which unfortunately we were too late to register for, and after our Tough Mudder conquest we thought it best to sit it out). Then after a few hours of cycling about 18 miles along the smooth new road, we watched as 200 classic car from the past 100 years were the first to drive along the new road.

Particular highlights for us were…

Ford Cortina Mk1
Morgan 3 Wheeler powered by a V Twin Cylinder Engine
Volvo P1800S B18 Coupe

Cadillac Eldorado with a power hood

VW Karmann Ghia with an aluminium body, rear engine air cooled.

Councillor Alex Ganotis, Leader of Stockport Council said: “I’m delighted that after many years of hard work and planning the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road is opening. The benefits this is going to bring for residents, businesses and our local road networks are significant. Not only will congestion on many local roads be reduced but pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users will also enjoy greater convenience in their journeys.”

The road is set to open on Monday 15th October.
